I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten,
and children listen
to hear sleigh bells in the snow
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white
It’s Christmas again, and here at the Globe we are all looking forward to our Christmas break and to what will hopefully be a busy and exciting 2014.
As always we have had a busy Autumn with students from all around the world. In September we welcomed our first group from Colombia – they spent 4 weeks with us learning English and visiting the beautiful South West. In addition we have had students from Mexico, Angola, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Ukraine and Russia, not to mention many from our neighbours in the EU.
In November our Senior teacher Paul Carr took over as Assistant Director of Studies in the Junior school. Debbie Hooper has now become a Senior teacher in adults and will be responsible for Learner Training. As part of her new role she will be helping all students improve their study skills in order to make the most of their time in England.
Also in November Tom Chant retired as Adult Social Programme coordinator, and now teaches exclusively in adults. Our new adult Social Programme Coordinator is Zai Ingram.
We wish everyone all the best in their new roles.
British Council Inspection
Our inspection took place in October and we are pleased to report that we have passed with flying colours!
Learner Training – Free monthly workshops
As part of our commitment to improving students’ learning we are now offering a free monthly workshop for all adult students, led by our Senior teacher, Debbie Hooper.
The workshops will focus on strategies to help students organise their work better, improve their study skills and take advantage of the many opportunities available to them when studying in the UK.
The December workshop focussed on keeping up your English during the holidays. Future topics include help with pronunciation, ideas for improving your vocabulary, reading outside the classroom, note taking and organising your study files. Workshops will usually be in the first week of the month although in January the session will be in the 2nd week to allow all returning students the chance to participate.
Workshops are open to all Globe students no matter what their level.
The Globe continues to promote professional development for all our staff. This year Globe staff have attended training sessions on: Safeguarding young learners, challenging your students, error correction, project design, creative grammar techniques, Cambridge exams, to name but a few. In addition our DOS Chrissi Florides helped organise the English UKSW Conference held on 16th November and attended by over 100 teachers (including several from the Globe) from all over the South West.
In the New Year Chrissi will be presenting a workshop on Communication skills at the Swiss English teachers’ Conference (ETAS), in Thun from 25-26 January. She will also be available to answer any questions about courses at the Globe and is keen to meet with colleagues so if you are an agent or a teacher in Switzerland and are attending the conference, please drop by and say hello to her.
Huge congratulations to our students from Angola, who surpassed all expectations in their recent IELTS exams. All their hard work certainly paid off!
Also congratulations to our teacher Gemma Simpson who successfully completed and passed the Trinity Lic Diploma in TESOL.

Florinda and Keeps celebrating exam success
The Globe has now acquired a new school building, no 22 St Davids Hill, opposite our current school. This will provide additional classrooms for both adults and juniors.
Eranta in the Ukraine
Eranta Andersone attended Business Link’s fair in Kiev where she met with prospective students and partners. This was the 2nd time she had attended this fair and as before she received a wonderful warm welcome. Many thanks to our colleagues at Business link for organising such a fantastic day.
In November our teacher Rachael Ridley Lamb and some of her students organised a week of fund raising towards the Red Cross’s appeal to help people in the Philippines affected by the typhoon. Events included a cake sale and a charity auction for teachers and students. Items auctioned included baby sitting services, Arabic cooking lessons, Spanish lessons and a sofa to stay on in Berlin! The students raised over £250 for the charity as well as improving their English while having fun!
Many thanks to all staff and students who took part and special thanks to Rachael for organising such a memorable week.
The Globe has a long history of working woth local; schools to give visiting students and leaders the chance to meet colleagues and other students from the UK.
In December we welcomed a group of Literature students from the Devon Studio school in Torquay. They worked with our literature students from St Therese Quimper in France and did a creative writing activity based on characterisation and character building in literature. Many thanks to the staff at Devon Studio school for helping us to organise this event.
Trips this term have included Bath, Stonehenge/Salisbury, Plymouth (including a visit to the famous Plymouth Gin distillery), Dartmoor and Cornwall as well as theatre evenings in the Bike shed theatre, carol concerts and pub nights in the most popular pubs in Exeter.
Students have been able to take advantage of the unusually mild weather and go on long beach walks and most recently they went to Falmouth in Cornwall where they visited the National Maritime Museum, admiring all the old ships and helicopters, and Pendennis Castle, with its spectacular views of the coast.
For the last day of term we are planning our usual Christmas extravaganza with quizzes, carol singing and mince pies!
Everyone at the Globe would like to wish you all a very happy, peaceful and
prosperous New Year and wish you all the best for a successful 2014.
We look forward to seeing some of you at the Globe over the coming months.
