New Year’s greetings!

Happy New Year to everyone! We hope the New Year has started well for you all and we wish everyone a peaceful and prosperous 2014.

British Council inspection

Here at the Globe our New Year started very well with the results of our BC inspection held in 2013.

We are pleased to announce that we received 7 areas of strength making the Globe a school of excellence and in the top 10% in the country.

Our full report can be read here; this is a short summary: The British Council inspected and accredited the Globe English Centre in October 2013. “The Accreditation Scheme assesses the standards of management, resources and premises, teaching and welfare and accredits organisations which meet the overall standard in each area inspected (see www.britishcouncil.org/accreditation for details).”

“Strengths were noted in the areas of student administration, premises and facilities, learning resources, academic management, course design, teaching and care of students.”

ETAS Conference Jan 25 – 26

ETAS (English teachers association Switzerland) celebrated its 30 year anniversary at their annual conference in the picturesque village of Thun.

Our Director of Studies Chrissi Florides attended the ETAS conference where she presented a workshop on getting students to communicate. There was a full house at the workshop and everyone enjoyed trying out a range of activities.

In the evening delegates enjoyed a gala dinner in the KKThun with a spectacular 30th anniversary cake! Many thanks to the ETAS committee for a wonderful 2 days.

Vocational courses – Future Careers

This month we welcomed 2 groups of Spanish students, one studying Business and Administration, the other studying Child education, to follow our Future Careers course. Instead of activities they had professional Business visits to local companies and schools. These included the Thistle Rougemont hotel and EDF, as well as St Sidwells Primary school and West Exe children’s centre. The students really enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about Education and business in the UK, and to practise their English skills in a work situation.

Professional Development

This month we hosted a group of teachers from the British Council Berlin who took a bespoke methodology course with us. As part of the course they visited local schools and colleges and took part in a variety of methodology workshops aimed at giving them new ideas for their classes. This included a talk on vocabulary testing with Paul Meara, Honorary Research Fellow at Oxford University and a workshop on dealing with challenging situations and challenging people with Christine Roberts at Exeter College.

With excursions to Bath, the Eden Project and Totnes the group managed to have some fun too, despite the weather!

Baby news

Huge congratulations to Paul Carr (Assistant Director of Studies for the Junior school) and his wife Lucy on the birth of their twins, Scarlett Mary and William Owen, born 10 February 2014. Good luck and hope you manage to get some sleep!

And finally the weather …

As you may have heard, we are having the wettest winter on record! There has been a lot of rain and many parts of the country are flooded, including the South West. However, Exeter has been relatively lucky – it’s not too cold and there has been some sunshine in between the wind and rain, with glimmers of spring as daffodils and snowdrops start to bloom.
